Membranes, Osmosis & Diffusion

Today we discussed the details of the cell membrane.  What is it made out of?  As well as how do things move from one side to the other.

Concentration gradients help drive the movement of substances in and out of a cell, which in turn relates to osmosis and diffusion.  Here's the animation on osmosis and diffusion that we watched in class.

Homework: Study for your test tomorrow.

Organelles Concept Map

Today you worked on connecting organelles and their functions, as well as identifying if the metabolic pathways were catabolic or anabolic. Below is the concept map you received in class.

Tomorrow D period will wrap up organelles and move on to the cell membrane, osmosis and diffusion.  C period you will learn about osmosis and diffusion.

Cells!

Today (or yesterday) you had a quiz on enzymes, ATP and metabolism.  After the quiz we review the prelab (below).  With the remaining time in class we started talking about cells.  We created our own neural pathway with our hands and saw just how many cell types were used.  We also started to watch the crash course video below:   Cell City.

Your homework over the weekend is to do the prelab.

Last Day with Microscopes

Today we continued using the microscopes and by now everyone should be comfortable looking at slides and focusing on the images.

For homework you need to create a want-ad for a part of the cell that you were assigned in class.

Your WANT AD should include a description of the function of the cell part (consult your book to expand on what we talked about in class). You should also include a picture; either hand drawn or printed.

This is due in class on Monday or Tuesday, depending on when your class meets.

Parts of the cell

Yesterday (or today for G period) we started to learn about the parts of the cell.  For homework due tomorrow,

Go to: http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/cell_model.htm  and begin by choosing Animal Cell

Take notes on the following cell parts:

Cytosol / Cytoplasm
Mitochondria
Lysosome
Rough ER
Cytoskeleton

If you prefer to use your book to take notes, you can also do that.  You can find the information in chapter 7.

Osmosis and Diffusion

Today students had a different type of reading quiz, where they needed to used Bloom's Taxonomy to write their own reading quiz questions.

After the reading quiz we finished the chapter 7 packet by wrapping up osmosis and diffusion.

Homework: Click the picture below to be taken to the website you'll use to complete your homework.

Cell Membranes

Today we recapped the parts of the cell and learned about the structure of a cell membrane.
Homework: Read section 7.3 and take notes for a reading quiz.

Cell Part Want Ads

Today we finished the overview of the cell parts and students worked on making want ads for the cell.
Homework: Finish your want and complete the test corrections. You can find instructions for test corrections here or read the post below this one.

Parts of the cell

Today students were given a packet for chapter 7, which includes a comparison of prokaryotes and eukaryotes, parts of a cell, osmosis and diffusion.

Tonight for homework you will make a Want Ad for a part of the cell.
